How to Print a Life Calendar Poster That Looks Good

A life calendar works best on a wall, and a wall needs a poster that prints cleanly. Here is how to get a crisp result from a home printer, a copy shop, or a large-format printer, along with a few framing ideas.

Pick the right paper size

The 90-year weekly calendar has 4,680 boxes, so the box size depends almost entirely on paper size:

  • Letter (8.5×11 in) or A4: boxes about 2 mm across. Readable and fillable with a fine pen; good for a notebook, binder, or a small frame.
  • Tabloid (11×17 in) or A3: boxes roughly 3 mm. The sweet spot for a desk or hallway, and many home printers can handle it.
  • 18×24 in: boxes around 5 mm. A real poster; easily filled with a marker.
  • 24×36 in: boxes of about 7 to 8 mm. Large enough to write a letter in each box. Print shops do this size routinely.

If you want to write in the boxes rather than just shade them, consider the months template or the years template. They have far fewer, larger boxes.

Printing at home

On this site, every calendar has a paper selector and a print button. Choose Letter or Tabloid before you print; the page sets the paper size and scales the grid to fill one sheet. In the print dialog:

  • Set scale to 100% or 'Default'. Avoid 'Fit to page' if your browser offers it separately, since the layout already fits.
  • Turn off 'Headers and footers' so the page URL and date do not print in the margins.
  • Turn on 'Background graphics' if your filled boxes or chapter colors look pale or missing.
  • Use the best quality setting your printer has. The grid lines are thin and benefit from it.

Saving a PDF for a print shop

To print larger than your printer allows, choose 'Save as PDF' as the destination in the print dialog. The calendar is drawn as vector graphics, so the PDF scales to any size without getting blurry. Take it to a copy shop or upload it to an online poster service and ask for it to be scaled to fill your chosen size. Matte paper looks better than gloss for this design and is easier to write on.

The 'Download PNG' button on the interactive calendar makes a 2,400-pixel-wide image. That is sharp up to roughly letter or tabloid size, and it is ideal for a phone or desktop wallpaper. For bigger prints, use the PDF route.

Making it personal

Before printing your own calendar, set a title: your name, 'Our family,' or a line that means something to you. Add a few chapters in contrasting colors, since too many similar colors blur together on paper. The legend prints below the grid automatically.

If you want to fill it in by hand, print a blank template and use a single fine-liner for lived weeks and colored pencils for chapters. Pencil lets you erase planned chapters if plans change, which they will.

Framing and hanging

A simple frame with a mat keeps a letter-size print from looking like an office handout. For a calendar you plan to keep filling in, skip the glass: use a clipboard, a magnetic poster hanger, or bulldog clips on a nail so you can take it down each week. Hanging it somewhere you pass but do not stare at, such as a hallway, a closet door, or near a front door, keeps it a gentle reminder rather than a constant one.

Troubleshooting

  • The calendar prints on two pages: check that the paper size in the print dialog matches the size you chose on the page, and that scale is 100%.
  • Colors are missing: enable 'Background graphics' in the print dialog.
  • The grid looks faint: switch to a higher print quality or a darker toner setting.
  • The PNG looks soft when printed large: use Save as PDF instead, which stays sharp at any size.

Questions people ask

What size should I print a life calendar?

Tabloid (11×17 in) is the best all-round size for a 90-year weekly calendar. Letter works for a notebook; 18×24 or 24×36 in from a print shop gives boxes large enough to write in.

How do I stop the URL printing on the page?

Turn off 'Headers and footers' in your browser's print dialog, usually under 'More settings'.

Can I print a life calendar larger than my printer allows?

Yes. Choose 'Save as PDF' in the print dialog. The calendar is vector-based, so a print shop can scale the PDF to poster size without blurring.
