How the count works

The calculator counts calendar days from your birth date to today's date in your own time zone. Your birth day itself counts as day zero, so on your first birthday you are 365 days old (366 if a February 29 fell in that year). Leap days are included automatically because the count uses real calendar dates rather than multiplying years by 365.

A quick mental estimate is your age times 365.25, plus the days since your last birthday. At 30 that is about 10,958 days; at 50, about 18,262.

Big-number days worth celebrating

Your 10,000th day falls at about 27 years and 4 months, a popular 'secret birthday' that hardly anyone knows they have. The 20,000th arrives at about 54 years and 9 months, and the 30,000th at about 82. Because nobody else is tracking these dates, they make good excuses for a small celebration, a letter to your future self, or a day off.

If you like this kind of counting, the weeks old calculator does the same for weeks, and the life calendar draws every one of those weeks on a single printable page.

Why count in days at all?

Years are so large that they blur. Days are so small they feel infinite. Seeing your life as a five-digit number sits in between: specific enough to feel real, and large enough to be a little humbling. A typical 80-year life is about 29,200 days. For the averages behind numbers like that, see Statistical Life Left.
